One of the questions I get from my friends outside this time of year is, "Have you been catching any fish?" It's inconceivable to them that in late April we don't have open water. Ecclesiastes 3:1 says, "There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens." From the moment Christ ascended to heaven until the moment that he returns, we are in a season of harvest.&nbsp;</div><br>This is THE time to point people to Christ. This is OUR time. When the commercial salmon season opens in Bristol Bay, the boats literally crowd the waters and set nets line the beaches. Why? Because the fish MUST be caught and can ONLY be caught during the season. There truly is a season for every activity under the heavens. <br><div data-offset-key="arblu-0-0"><br data-text="true"></div><div data-offset-key="eh1h5-0-0">For Christians, this is the season of harvest, and Jesus tells us that the harvest is overwhelmingly abundant. He simply needs workers. Invite someone to church today. Call or message friends to let them know you are praying for them. The photos from the top of the mountain are fantastic, but it isn't just the photos- BEING on top is fantastic. The climb itself? Not so much. Depending upon how I am feeling on a particular day, winter climbs range through a spectrum of 'unpleasant' at the good end to 'exceedingly unpleasant' at the other. It is a continuous grind of hard work.&nbsp;</div><br>But let me add a layer to that. Having partners to climb with is very enjoyable on top of the unpleasantness. In other words, it doesn't make the climb EASIER, but it makes it much BETTER, if that makes sense. In many ways, this life we experience is a never-ending series of climbs. We have seasons of grinding hard work (that friends make so much better) followed by seasons of being on top of the world. <br><div data-offset-key="28c5t-0-0"><br data-text="true"></div><div data-offset-key="8ua8u-0-0">If you are in a hard season, thank God that he has given you the strength to climb. We split up in the timber and began a slow meander trying to find the clearing. Soon I heard a shot, and my partner, Tim Hand, had a beautiful cinnamon colored black bear. It was then that we discovered another mistake. We had been in such a hurry to get to the bear that we only grabbed our rifles. Our backpacks and camps were still near the top of this terribly steep mountain. We didn't dare leave the bear where it was because we didn't know if we could find it again.&nbsp;</div><br>We were both wearing a belt, so we took them off and lashed the bear's front foot to it's back foot on each side. Then I helped Tim shoulder the bear like a backpack and grabbed both rifles. Tim said, "I'm leaving my camp. There's no way I'm going to climb that mountain again." I said, "You pack the bear out and I'll climb the mountain, break down our tents and bring out both of our backpacks." Both of our full packs were extremely heavy, so Tim asked, "How are you going to do that?" I said, "I'll strap them up tight and just let them roll to the bottom. Then I'll have to carry one and drag one." <br><div data-offset-key="crgrn-0-0"><br data-text="true"></div><div data-offset-key="atdkd-0-0">What's the point of all of this? Where there's a WILL, there's a WAY. Friends, don't give up too easily. Who ever heard of wearing a bear like a backpack? Who ever heard of one man bringing out two heavy packs in one trip? Jesus asked his disciples to do things that seemed impossible to them. He sent them out town-to-town to share the gospel without any money or food or warm clothing or overnight gear. They had no advance plans for lodging and no contacts to guide them.&nbsp;</div><br>Jesus essentially told them, "I know you don't know HOW- just go do it!" As soon as I could see I climbed to the summit and began walking the ridgeline glassing for bear. My partner, Tim Hand, simply set up his spotting scope next to the tents and sat down to wait. I have never been good at sitting still. I walked a mile or so and then came back to the tent. I hadn't seen a thing. Tim, however, had spotted a bear at the bottom of the mountain and was waiting for me so we could go after him.</div><br>Covering all that distance I came up empty. Sitting still, Tim found what we were looking for. There is a great spiritual lesson here. Psalm 46:10 says, "Be still, and know that I am God." So often in life the key to hearing God's voice- the key to discovering our next right step- is to be still. Then, after hearing from God, we have the faith to move forward with confidence. The bear was in a small clearing in the timber and we didn't know if we would be able to find him. <br><div data-offset-key="ci25i-0-0"><br data-text="true"></div><div data-offset-key="c05ci-0-0">Even so, we grabbed our rifles, made a plan and headed down the mountain as fast as we were able to go. But on this particular mountain, the only one I've ever been on like this, the vertical incline didn't stop even for a moment. The steep pitch was utterly continuous.</div><br>There was no small shelf where we could relax our calf muscles for a moment. There was nowhere to set our packs down to rest without them tumbling back to the bottom of the mountain. It was so steep, we couldn't even sit down. Our quads were exhausted, but our Achilles tendons and calf muscles were under so much constant strain that they were throbbing. Every step was extremely painful, but standing still on that incline was even worse. There was no escaping the suffering, so we just gritted our teeth and pressed forward. <br><div data-offset-key="cl9li-0-0"><br data-text="true"></div><div data-offset-key="4tlff-0-0">Finally, just beneath the summit, there was a narrow shelf, perhaps 10 feet wide, where we could pitch our tents. So often in life there is no escape from our suffering. Our only option is to move forward one painful step at a time. As Christians, we genuinely give our burdens to Jesus, but we discover that we must lay them down 100 times a day. The apostle Paul, who knew what it was to suffer, wrote about "our light and momentary afflictions." You see, he knew the secret.&nbsp;</div><br>We must view our suffering from the standpoint of our future- our eternity. Every follower of Christ has an amazing life- a joyful life- a wildly exciting and fulfilling life- just around the corner. For now, for just a little while, we walk by faith. What surprises them most is discovering the unexpected difficulty coming down. It's so easy for us to aim for a certain 'high' only to discover that we ended up in a bad place. In all of my years of sheep hunting, I've never gotten into trouble going UP a mountain, but have been in incredibly dangerous positions three different times coming down. In fact, the reason that I don't hunt certain places is not because I can't climb to the top, but rather because I know I can't come safely down with a load of meat.&nbsp;</div><br>Every single step that we take has consequences. In Haggai 2:5 we read, "Now this is what the Lord Almighty says. 'Give careful thought to your ways.'" Decisions matter. If you WANT to be in a better place in life, PLAN and WORK- take the steps that lead to a better life. I shot two bulls, my buddy shot four, and his brother, a non-resident, shot one. We had to butcher and pack out seven large bulls all the way to town.&nbsp;</div><br>As we sat at the airport with over 1,000 pounds of meat, waiting for our flight out, a large group of fishermen came and purchased every seat. I decided to look at this as an opportunity, and began putting word out all over the island that I would be having a church service on Sunday morning. Once after an entire night of fishing without a single fish, Jesus told them to put out to deeper water and cast their nets. When they did, they caught so many fish that their nets began to break, and they filled two boats to the point of almost sinking.<br><div data-offset-key="cebt0-0-0"><br data-text="true"></div><div data-offset-key="4bqbt-0-0">Then Jesus said, "Come, follow me, and you will catch men." You see, the point of fishing is catching. As they went forth proclaiming Christ as Savior, many men, women, and children were literally captured and set free by the power of the gospel. Go fish! Share your faith and you WILL make a difference in this world. As crazy as it sounds, we had learned through trial-and-error in the severe cold that we were able to hold our shotguns with bare hands at that temperature. Not right out of the truck, of course, but after piling on heavy gear and generating tremendous heat while walking 10 or 15 minutes on long Alaskan snowshoes. Activity didn't change the temperature of the world around us, but it most certainly increased our own temperature.&nbsp;</div><br>The same thing is true spiritually. If you feel lukewarm or cold in your faith, the problem isn't the temperature of the world around you. The world will always be cold toward Christ. The problem is that you've been sedentary- you haven't been active- you haven't been working. SERVING generates heat. PRAYING (not mouthing a few words, but honestly staying in one place for an hour and PRAYING) generates heat. Spending time in spiritual conversation with a brother or sister in the Lord generates heat.
