There was a group of us with four wheelers and side by sides. Virtually everyone was stuck in the first muck hole. Thanks to our winches and extra hands, we only spent about an hour to go 100 feet. Then, we started up a vertical rock and boulder laden hill. How bad was it? Two professional dirt bikers couldn't make it. One 4 wheeler tumbled again and again and again before finally stopping upside-down. One 4 wheeler tumbled to the bottom of a gorge, and we never recovered it. I didn't even attempt it. I sat with the dirt bikers and shared the gospel. Be careful who you follow.

This is even more important in spiritual matters. There are not only false religions (like Mormonism and Jehovah's Witnesses), there are FALSE TEACHERS inside Christ's church. They themselves are led by deceiving spirits and teach things that are utterly untrue. There are also many WRONG TEACHERS- men who are genuinely saved, but who are in error on important matters. On top of all of this, there are men who are charismatic and able to draw crowds but do not have the SPIRITUAL MATURITY to lead others. Be careful who you follow.

How do you know if you are on the right track? The Bible says that a group of new Christians in the Greek city of Berea "were more noble than their brothers, because they tested everything they heard against the Scriptures to see if it was true." At the same time, a part of me would love to have the right piece of heavy equipment, a boat that goes out on the ocean, a Supercub, and a giant track rig for hunting moose. I've said many times that I could live in a 400 square foot apartment if I had a 10 car garage. So- will I buy any of those things I'd like to have? Probably not. Why? They don't fit my life.

If I lived in Seward, I might have a boat. If I lived rural on a landing strip, I might have a Supercub. If I was a mechanic with a BIG pickup and trailer, I might have heavy equipment and a track rig. For my life as it is now, any of those things would simply be adding work and headaches to my life. Life is all about choices, isn't it? Instead of all of those things, Laura and I have chosen to invest in Christian school tuition for our kids, building a church and supporting missions around the world. From our perspective, it was an easy choice.

Of course, many people have those things (and more) and still are heavily invested in taking the gospel to the world. The beautiful thing that we've discovered is that as we've kept God first, he has always blessed us beyond measure. First, become your best self spiritually, physically and emotionally. Get up early in the morning when the house is quiet to spend time with the Lord. Pray fervently for your spouse and your marriage. Read the passages about joy and peace.

Now, by FAITH, determine to be joyful and peaceful TODAY. Add a 30 to 60 minute intensive workout to your schedule. This releases endorphins and pays benefits in every area of life. You can go to the gym, go for a run, walk stairs, or simply do an extended walk outside. Next, STOP ARGUING. Determine to speak only words that encourage and build up your spouse. Finally, REMEMBER YOUR VOW. If you met with Jesus for coffee today, he would have only one question about your marriage.

He would ask, "Have you loved your spouse today the way that you PROMISED me you would?" You might want to list your spouse's shortcomings and poor behaviors to Jesus, but I think he would just wave that off and say, "I'll speak to your spouse about that. What I want to know from you is, have you LOVED your spouse today the way that you PROMISED me you would?" Love is a choice. CHOOSE to love. Men, she desires to be treasured- to know that she is the one who captivates your heart. A small gift, flowers, date nights- these are things that actively demonstrate your love for her.

Ladies, he needs not only your love, but your honor and respect. Rather than reminding him of his shortcomings, continuously affirm those areas where he leads well, whether as a provider, helping with the kids or fixing the cars. Don't point out his weaknesses, but affirm those areas of strength. These things may go a long way toward 'fixing' your marriage. They may not. (Again, you cannot change another person.) But they WILL give you MORE PEACE and MORE JOY in your LIFE and in your HOME. Yet so many Christian men and women- especially women- choose poorly. Why is that? One of the following two reasons is overwhelmingly true, but after I share these, I will also share the underlying reason for what drives those two choices. Why do Christians seeking to be married choose poorly?

1) Loneliness. Being single is massively energy consuming for those who wish to be married. People get tired- emotionally exhausted- from waiting.2) Fixation on personal appearance. He's not tall enough. She's not thin enough. He's not athletic enough. She doesn't look like the actresses on TV. Christians in the last 50 years, especially in the last 20 years, have become so fixated on personal appearance that they walk right past dozens of great potential spouses because they don't fit the idea of the 'perfect man or woman' in their minds.

The underlying reason for these poor choices is a LACK of SPIRITUAL FOCUS. Single people, there is a reason why arranged marriages so seldom fail. It's because in those cultures they understand that you don't FALL in love, you CHOOSE to love. OF COURSE you want to stay in shape and look your best. After all, the Scripture says that you are to "honor God with your body."

But when seeking a spouse, why not imitate God's method of determining suitability? He says, "God does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart." Look at the heart! Does he love the Lord? Is he committed to being a provider? Does she love the Lord? Is she eager to be a wife and mother? First, I would tell you this- CHOOSE WELL. Ladies, the man who loves God FIRST will love you BEST. Choose a godly man who is gentle and kind, who loves children, and who is committed to being a good provider. Men, the woman who loves God FIRST will love YOU best. Choose a woman who is generous and kind, who loves children, and who takes pleasure in the thought of managing a home. My second bit of advice is this- FORGIVE QUICKLY. Pride punishes, love forgives.

Finally, don't spend your energy seeking the perfect spouse. Spend it BECOMING the kind of man or woman who will BE an excellent spouse. It's true that there are no guarantees. It's true that those who choose well are sometimes abandoned. Even so, those who CHOOSE WELL and FORGIVE QUICKLY have a FAR better chance of BEING and STAYING happily married! -Be blessed! -Pastor Brad

Written on June 15, 2026

He loved the water and was an absolute joy to train. He was intelligent, eager to please, and absolutely obedient. Working with him was so rewarding that I actually thought about leaving my teaching career and training hunting dogs full time. I had a very high view of myself as a trainer... until I bought a second dog. 'Sander-Took-A-Gander' (Sandy) was a yellow lab with an excellent pedigree. Both of her parents were champion retrievers. Sandy, on the other hand, didn't like the water, wasn't interested in retrieving, and refused to "come" on command. This humbled me greatly.

I had to work much harder with Sandy for lesser results. I learned that I wasn't such a great trainer after all, but rather that Tucker was a great dog. In the same way, every child is different. Some are naturally compliant and eager to please. They have a gentle nature and make parenting a joy. Others are difficult from the very beginning. They require boatloads of energy and constant discipline. Think about this- if I hadn't spent a moment to train either of my dogs, they would have been wild and disobedient. They would have been in a pen, on a chain, or on a leash for much of their lives. They would have had NO freedom.

The same is true with our children. We train for obedience because OBEDIENCE LEADS to FREEDOM. Yes, with some children it DOES require much more work. With some children it is far less rewarding. But those are the very children who most need your time and energy and boundaries and discipline. God has given your children free will. They will not all respond well. Some will make bad decisions. Don't give up. Pray.

Find parenting wisdom in the Word of God. Seek godly counsel from Christian parents with well-behaved children. Be humble. Even though you may not see it in the moment, what you are doing IS making a difference in the life of your child! I never read the Bible, I never prayed, I rarely attended church after high school, and I cursed continuously. Then I got saved. A godly pastor suggested that I should get baptized. I resented his saying that. After all, I had been baptized as an infant. In fact, I had never seen or heard of a baptism that wasn't an infant. Over the coming months, I witnessed a number of baptisms and heard for the first time what the Bible both models and teaches. EVERY baptism in the Bible was by immersion, JESUS was baptized by immersion, and the Greek word 'baptizo' means to be fully immersed.

Not only that, but every baptism in the Bible came AFTER a person put his or her faith in Christ. During those first months, I sensed the Holy Spirit telling me again and again, "You know that you need to do this." And so? I surrendered. I was baptized right here at The Crossing. It was the first time that I had ever publicly taken a stand for Christ. I still remember the beautiful experience to this day. IT'S NOT TOO LATE FOR YOU!
