I never read the Bible, I never prayed, I rarely attended church after high school, and I cursed continuously. Then I got saved. A godly pastor suggested that I should get baptized. I resented his saying that. After all, I had been baptized as an infant. In fact, I had never seen or heard of a baptism that wasn't an infant. Over the coming months, I witnessed a number of baptisms and heard for the first time what the Bible both models and teaches. EVERY baptism in the Bible was by immersion, JESUS was baptized by immersion, and the Greek word 'baptizo' means to be fully immersed.&nbsp;</div><br>Not only that, but every baptism in the Bible came AFTER a person put his or her faith in Christ. During those first months, I sensed the Holy Spirit telling me again and again, "You know that you need to do this." And so? I surrendered. I was baptized right here at The Crossing. It was the first time that I had ever publicly taken a stand for Christ. I still remember the beautiful experience to this day. IT'S NOT TOO LATE FOR YOU! More accurately- for our car troubles. You see, building a church, raising five children of our own and helping to raise nearly two dozen more kept us on a slim budget. In fact, we drove two vehicles that had both been totaled (and not fixed) for many years. Understanding that those two were our 'good' vehicles, you can imagine how much money we invested in a car for our kids when they started driving. But we wouldn't change a thing. Life is about priorities, isn't it?&nbsp;</div><br>There is certainly nothing wrong with having a new car for those who can afford it. I think that's great. We were hiking along the edge of a glacier and had to be careful not to turn an ankle on the loose, rocky ground. We were after Mountain Goats, but without flying the country we honestly had no idea if any goats even lived on the mountain at the head of the glacier. On top of that, this was Friday evening and we had to be home by Sunday night. No pressure, right?&nbsp;</div><br>We made it about 10 miles before setting up camp as darkness was settling in. We estimated that we were still several miles from the foot of the mountain, so we decided to build a small fire and make our dinner. As we sat talking quietly and drinking a cup of coffee, a large black bear ambled out 20 yards from us and began stripping berries off the bushes. We had already agreed that we would not shoot a bear on the way IN because that would end our goat hunt. As the bear drew closer I just looked at my friend and said, "George, if my wife was here, we'd have to go home now." The reason that we were unconcerned is that we had two loaded rifles within arms reach. Because we were properly equipped, we had no fear. <br><div data-offset-key="e2d6b-0-0"><br data-text="true"></div><div data-offset-key="5d6o6-0-0">The same thing is true spiritually. Those who walk closely with Christ- those who live in union with him- are truly not afraid of anything that life brings their way. Why? Because as the Apostle Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 5:8, "...to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord." The reality is this: the worst day for the world (death) is the BEST day for followers of Christ.&nbsp;</div><br>Friends, don't allow the devil to deceive you- don't allow him to trap you in a place of stress, worry and fear. It wasn't until we got close that I realized we were actually riding on a frozen lake in deep powder, and that the 'land formations' were the tips of icebergs. The tip is what we see, but often there is a mountain of ice just beneath the surface. Arctic sailors learned centuries ago that what you can see, though beautiful and appealing, is actually a warning. The real danger is what you can't see- the part that is hidden beneath the surface.&nbsp;</div><br>It is so easy for us to be lured into sin through alcohol, drugs, sex or even the lust for money. But those things are simply the tip of the iceberg. The problem with sin is that it always takes you farther than you wanted to go, keeps you longer than you wanted to stay, and costs you more than you wanted to pay. Many lives, families and marriages have been shipwrecked because people did not recognize the danger lurking beneath the surface. <br><div data-offset-key="968nb-0-0"><br data-text="true"></div><div data-offset-key="5uohl-0-0">God has given us a new identity. This year the combination of nasty weather and our own busy schedules have kept us off the river. I have been missing it. There is an old hymn that says, "I have peace like a river in my soul." There is a certain peace- a certain calming of the soul- that I experience when I am on a quiet, meandering stream or river. Everything about it is soothing. It's a natural stress reliever.&nbsp;</div><br>Psalm 46:4 says, "There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells." Upon coming in she said to me, "I can't believe the number of men you have serving at this church. I couldn't give you the names of four men who serve in any way at our church." We see this pattern all over America: when a commitment to TRUTH leaves a church, masculine men leave the church. Why?&nbsp;</div><br>Because, unlike women, men do not come to church to meet our relational needs. For that we'll work on a project together or go fishing or some type of outdoor adventure. Men have little tolerance for liberal churches that are little more than 'religious social circles.' They want hard truth that impacts their lives. When it comes to building relationships, they want action.<br><div data-offset-key="298rl-0-0"><br data-text="true"></div><div data-offset-key="2cri6-0-0">When some young men- recent Christian immigrants from an African nation- were asked what gets in the way of their walk with Jesus, one of them replied, "Soccer and hunting lions." Action. Women are generally much better than men when it comes to developing relationships. They primarily develop relationships through conversation, where men develop them through action and activity. Knowing this, Men's Ministry is a high priority at nearly every Bible teaching Church.&nbsp;</div><br>Don't get me wrong- Christ is always at the center of our activities, but we come together to DO things. THEN- once relationships are established- we start meeting together for Bible study or coffee. My advice to men? Get connected. My advice to women? Help your husbands and sons to get connected! In John 21:3 Peter said, "I'm going fishing," and the disciples replied, "We'll go with you." Believe me, it wasn't about the fishing- it was about being together. Trying to get my youngest son a caribou proved to be a long endeavor. It looked like this: drive 250 miles, hunt for 2 days, drive 250 miles home. We did this several times before finally seeing a small band of caribou standing in the snow in heavy fog. My son got one off-hand shot before they bolted into the timber. He said that he thought he hit one, but nothing went down and there was no blood in the snow. We left disappointed and pulled a sled in to a small, frozen lake where Caribou sometimes cross. We didn't have a machine, so the sled was to help us get a caribou out if we got one.&nbsp;</div><br>Late in the day, having seen nothing else, we went back to where Michael had taken his shot. We were dead tired from dragging that sled through deep snow, but we didn't want to quit. We decided to follow the caribou tracks in the fresh snow from earlier in the day to see if we could catch up with them. That's when I saw it- a speck in the snow about the size of the head of a needle that didn't look right. I gently scooped it with my mitten and held it up close to my face. We were 100 yards from where the caribou were standing when my son took the shot, and I said, "Mike, this looks like blood." That was it. No blood trail- just one tiny speck. <br><div data-offset-key="6noer-0-0"><br data-text="true"></div><div data-offset-key="f4jct-0-0">To make a long story short- we did find his beautiful bull caribou dead in the timber. For some bizarre reason it didn't bleed. After days of trying he finally had his caribou. Persistence pays. The same thing is true spiritually. In a typical week I have numerous opportunities to invite people to church and several spiritual conversations. Of those, only a few come to church. But some DO come! Some ARE saved! Persistence pays! Friends, don't get discouraged and don't give up! Your faithfulness WILL make a difference in someone's eternity! The meat freezes in cold weather and is good all winter and spring. When it comes to food, these and almost countless other methods have been devised for PRESERVATION. &nbsp;Preservation accomplishes two things: it PROTECTS what is good, and, it keeps what is GOOD &nbsp;from becoming BAD.&nbsp;</div><br>As Christians, the righteousness (GOODness) of Christ has been gifted- imputed- to us. Skinning and cutting up a bear well after midnight by myself is not fun. Getting a bear roast out of the freezer is fun. Men are wired differently, aren't we? We push ourselves- willing to embrace long seasons of discomfort that borders on suffering- simply to meet a challenge. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of women who push themselves, but for some reason an element of risk or danger seems to draw the hearts of men.&nbsp;</div><br>Jesus understood this. He knew that his followers would be hunted down like animals, but he didn't tell them to have courage in the face of fear. No, he said to them, "Do not fear the one who can kill your body and after that can do no more." DO NOT FEAR. His was not a "push forward in spite of your fears" message. DO NOT FEAR. As a young married couple in Copper River we were allowed one subsistence caribou each. She wasn't happy about it, but I insisted that she shoot one because we needed the meat. She, however, sat in the tundra overlooking a river and facing the other direction as I cut it up.&nbsp;</div><br>When we got home she did not help process the meat. But in the coming weeks I saw a change that was very noticeable. Getting those roasts and steaks and burger out of the nice little wrapped packages in the freezer was just like getting it from the supermarket. I actually brought my last sheep out in three trips, though I could certainly have made it in two.&nbsp;</div><br>No matter how hard you train, your body eventually wears out and breaks down. In fact, the Apostle Paul refers to his body as a 'tent' where he lives. Though God created these 'tents' to be eternal, the curse of sin brought about death. The Good News is that every Christian will one day have a brand new perfect body! More than that, the Word of God tells us that we will be "clothed with immortality." Forever young. More and more I like the sound of that. <br><div data-offset-key="eaho5-0-0"><br data-text="true"></div><div data-offset-key="1tlk-0-0">Knowing all of this, how should we respond? Simple. I actually drove my snowmachine inside. A year later the opening was gone. You see, to all appearances glaciers are rock solid. The ice is solid and immovable and unshakable. But appearances can be deceptive, can't they? That ice is continuously shifting. No matter how level and firm and deep the sheet of ice, it would be unwise to build a house there. It SEEMS like a firm foundation, but it is NOT a firm foundation.&nbsp;</div><br>I read of another young star athlete- a young man who earned millions and was drafted number one to play professional sports- who died tragically- mixed up in drug use and dealing. What happened? He built his life on a wrong foundation. He wasted his fortune and lost his fame when he was cut after 6 years. His foundation of being a professional athlete- trusting in his athleticism and money- trusting in the continuous attention lavished on him- proved to be shifting sand rather than solid rock. <br><div data-offset-key="sjqi-0-0"><br data-text="true"></div><div data-offset-key="8jpch-0-0">If you want a house that will stand forever, there is only one foundation. 1 Corinthians 3:11 says, "For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ."
