It is rock-solid evidence that life was once here- that a caribou once stood in this very spot. Evidence is important. If I believe that I'm in caribou country and find sheds, that confirms my belief. If I don't believe there have ever been caribou in a particular place and find sheds, that evidence proves me wrong- changes my mind.

I am not a Christian by 'blind' faith. Making dinner for the teams demonstrates that we are truly thankful for their investment in our ministry.

2) Encouragement- When we host the Chinooks baseball team, missionary families and others in ministry, our goal is to encourage them- to show that others know that what they are doing is important for God's kingdom.

3) Material Help- Dozens of individuals and families have stayed with us for extended periods of time, either to save money or because they simply could not afford to stay somewhere else.

4) RELATIONSHIPS- This one overrides them all. Whether hosting a Bible study or simply having someone for dinner, we are getting to know people better (thus learning to love them on a deeper level).

Friends, we were created to be IN RELATIONSHIPS! It's often said, "There are no guarantees." That is only partly true. There are SOME guarantees in life. Jesus said, "I am THE WAY and THE TRUTH and THE LIFE. No one comes to the Father except through me." He said, "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that WHOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM shall not perish, but have everlasting life."

Friends, that's a guarantee you can stake your life on. Why is Christianity not only surviving- but thriving? Because thousands witnessed his miracles and because hundreds saw the resurrected Christ over a period of forty days after the resurrection." I was on a trail that was a mixture of tundra, black spruce and birch, choked with willow brush. It was impossible to move quietly. When I came to a muddy spot, there was a huge grizzly track in the trail. It was fresh and moving the same direction as me. I only had two days to hunt. I wondered if he would come back along this same trail. How did I know it was a grizzly and not a black bear? On this particular track- size, of course- but more than that. A black bear's front claws are retracted when it walks. A grizzly bear's claws make little dots in the mud out in front of its toes.

In this way, you can tell the difference even if it's a young, small bear. In a similar way, Christians can be known by the 'tracks' we leave behind. Signs of TRUE faith are visible. Among them are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness and self- control. These are saturated within our conversations and actions, and are the platform of our witness for Christ.

A beautiful, simple song that came out of the 'Jesus movement' of the early 1970's said it well- "And they'll know we are Christians by our love, by our love. But that's because I'm not battling to survive. Because I know that my hardship is temporary, it is much easier to endure. In fact, one of my favorite things is to come into my cabin after a long, hard day in the snowy cold and light a fire and open my Bible.

Chief Harry Johns, a wonderful brother in the Lord who preached for decades in the Athabascan language at his church and on the radio, told me that in the wintertime, before the Glenn highway existed, that they would walk from Copper Center to Palmer during the coldest part of winter (− 50°). To do this, they had to walk up the frozen Tazlina River and across the lake, over the pass and down onto the Matanuska glacier, and then walk the frozen Matanuska River to Palmer. Imagine doing that with women and children and needing to camp without tents and light fires along the way.

When I think of that kind of hardship, I recognize that my hardest days followed by a warm cabin would have been delightful to those people. Keeping a proper perspective helps us to endure hard things. 2 Timothy 2:3 says, "Endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ." Then, they go up into the mountains, spend five minutes plunging through the snow to their crotch and trying to pull their snowshoe up out of the hole, go back to their cars and never go again. Why? Because those cute little and midsize snowshoes need dense snow- the kind you get in states with warm daytime temperatures- the kind of snow that's good for making snowmen. In Alaska those snowshoes have very limited value. What is needed to stay on top is the long, traditional snowshoes.

I've spent hundreds of days hunting or running my trapline on those long snowshoes- many times at temperatures of −30° or colder. At first, they are a bit cumbersome and tricky. To stay out of trouble you must learn to WALK in a NEW WAY. The same thing is true of following Christ. When I became a Christian, I had to learn to WALK in a NEW WAY. It wasn't easy. When I walked away from the party life, I had some good friends who walked away from me.

They were not interested in a friend who didn't do all of the things we had done together for years, and even less interested in a friend who invited them to church and Bible study and shared what Jesus had done in his life. This is why I don't fish Coho (Silver) salmon or hunt ducks in September. Getting a moose or caribou has always been higher priority. But one year when my parents were visiting us in Copper River, I had all of my meat in the freezer early enough to fish. My dad and I went to Valdez to fish Silvers. They were jumping everywhere, but try as we might, we didn't have a single strike. After one long cast, my line got all tangled up in my reel. By the time I got it untangled, my lure had dropped all the way to the bottom. I had barely started to reel it in when a fish hit hard. I said, "Dad, they're on the bottom!"

Within an hour we had landed our limit- 12 beautiful fish. Think about that for a moment. The fish were jumping everywhere on the surface, but they were feeding much deeper. The activity that we saw on the surface was actually evidence of deeper life. The same thing is true in our spiritual lives. As a general rule, when we see believers actively sharing their faith, actively serving their church and others, actively praying and studying their Bibles, that surface activity is evidence of a faith that is much deeper. This 'deepening' of our faith is a never- ending cycle.

As we are obedient to Christ, our faith grows deeper. As our faith grows deeper, we desire and practice greater obedience- which leads us deeper still. If there is no spiritual life ON the surface, there is rarely much life BELOW the surface. So- when people look at you, is evidence of your faith visible? Do they see a person utterly committed to Christ? Do they experience love and generosity and kindness and encouragement from you? They should. Remember, OBEDIENCE leads to DEEP FAITH. As a young man I was an avid bow hunter, and had already taken elk, antelope, whitetail deer, black bear, moose and caribou with a bow. I knew what I was doing... but you can't plan the weather. It was August 10th, I was in the Brooks Range above the Arctic Circle, and it was snowing sideways. Everything was perfect except for the weather. The snow made my long climb even more difficult. The strong wind was pelting me with snow so that it felt like little bb's were hitting my face and right ear.

One thing I've learned in my decades in the mountains is that the weather can change instantly. This is what I was hoping for as I climbed. I got within forty yards of a beautiful ram, but it might as well have been four miles. The gale force winds ruined my chances. There are so many things in life that are utterly beyond our control. The weather is typically a small thing, but everyone knows that we also face big things. A faithful, loving spouse is abandoned. An accident or illness takes the life of a loved one. An exceptional employee gets laid off because of the economy.

When we face difficult circumstances that are beyond our control, the way that we respond makes a world of difference for our present and our future. Grieve, yes. We should grieve. But we shouldn't wallow. Satan wants you to stamp the label 'Victim' on your forehead and then live in a quagmire of self-pity and resentment. The Lord wants you to take a deep breath, trust Him, and move forward- remembering that Jesus said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you."

I remember as a very young child, my mother reading a book to me in which a little chick went around shouting, "The sky is falling!" Don't live that way. Jesus said, "I have come that they may have life- and have it to the full!" Yes, hard things will come your way that are utterly beyond your control. After practice, I asked Tim how much weight he could bench press. He is truly a very humble guy and said, "I blew my rotator cuff and I don't lift weights anymore."

I continued to pressure him while he evaded giving an answer until finally when I asked again, he responded, "One time?" I said, "Yes, how much could you bench one time?" He replied, "Oh, I guess I could do 400." Later I learned that he had run a full 26.2 mile marathon when he was ten years old. He moved from rural Alaska to Indiana for high school. This was back when Indiana had only one class for sports. News flash- that's not MY story! I was so tiny that in my 8th grade year the wrestling coach came into basketball practice and asked me to go wrestle in a "B" Squad tournament because they needed an '80 pounder.' Halfway through eighth grade I weighed just over 70 pounds. God made us all differently, didn't he? But here's the beautiful thing- in all of creation there is only one YOU.

You are a unique masterpiece created in the image of God. In Jeremiah 1:5 God said, "Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you." Psalm 139:13-14 says, "You created my inmost being, you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made." God says of those who belong to him, "You are my treasured possession." We were literally created to LOVE GOD and to LOVE OTHERS. You must be prepared to sweat profusely as you climb, to be wet for days on end, and to be shivering cold when you stop to glass. The payoff for those fortunate few is a beautiful ram and some of the best eating wild game in North America. My good friend and assistant wrestling coach Tim Hand took me on my first sheep hunt. At 5' 7" and over 200 pounds, he is pound for pound the physical strongest man I've ever known.

We set up camp 25 miles into the mountains, the last 8 miles traveling on foot. Though the weather was perfect and though I had been hunting since I was a boy, this was a level of work I had never imagined. More than that, I didn't understand how we could travel mile after mile in beautiful mountain country without there being a single Dall sheep. I asked Tim about it, and he said we had to GO DEEPER. Eventually we got deep into the mountains- deep enough to find little bands of ewes and lambs, and finally a band of rams.

So often in life I have been wrestling with a decision and not finding an answer. But as I have gone deeper with God- spending more time in His Word, spending more time in prayer, spending more time in spiritual conversation with brothers in the Lord- the answers I needed have come. God has an answer for every struggle you face. When indecision stops you cold- GO DEEPER! God tells us, "When you seek me you will find me, when you seek me with all your heart." When you cannot find the answers that you need, GO DEEPER, and you will be blessed! -Pastor Brad
My first sheep camp.

Written on July 13, 2026
