Get Connected

Many years ago we had a visitor from out of state on a Sunday morning who attended a church twice our size. Upon coming in she said to me, "I can't believe the number of men you have serving at this church. I couldn't give you the names of four men who serve in any way at our church." We see this pattern all over America: when a commitment to TRUTH leaves a church, masculine men leave the church. Why?

Because, unlike women, men do not come to church to meet our relational needs. For that we'll work on a project together or go fishing or some type of outdoor adventure. Men have little tolerance for liberal churches that are little more than 'religious social circles.' They want hard truth that impacts their lives. When it comes to building relationships, they want action.

When some young men- recent Christian immigrants from an African nation- were asked what gets in the way of their walk with Jesus, one of them replied, "Soccer and hunting lions." Action. Women are generally much better than men when it comes to developing relationships. They primarily develop relationships through conversation, where men develop them through action and activity. Knowing this, Men's Ministry is a high priority at nearly every Bible teaching Church.

Don't get me wrong- Christ is always at the center of our activities, but we come together to DO things. THEN- once relationships are established- we start meeting together for Bible study or coffee. My advice to men? Get connected. My advice to women? Help your husbands and sons to get connected! In John 21:3 Peter said, "I'm going fishing," and the disciples replied, "We'll go with you." Believe me, it wasn't about the fishing- it was about being together. Be blessed! -Pastor Brad
