Lead Well

We waded the river, each with half of a young moose's boned out meat in our packs. The other shore was a near-vertical soft, silty hill leading up to the ridgeline. By using the scrub willow brush growing there we were able to pull ourselves up as we climbed. At the top, however, we faced another problem. We had no more brush to pull us forward, so before we could climb up onto the ridge we had to 'shrug' our packs off on top with our bodies still beneath the ridgeline on the hill. Because the packs were too heavy to lift, I sat on the ground and put my arms through the shoulder straps while my partner helped me to roll over onto my hands and knees and then helped me stand up. Then I helped him do the same thing. There was an excellent game trail and firm footing, so now we only had a mile of heavy walking.

I set my sights on camp and took off. When I arrived and dropped my pack, I turned around and my partner was nowhere to be seen. Mmmm. Great life lesson here. You see, you're not really LEADING unless someone is FOLLOWING. If your continuous shouting at your kids (or ignoring their poor behavior) isn't producing results, you are not leading them because they are not following. Whether we are talking about leadership in our homes or workplace, the critical indicator of leadership is that people are willingly following you.

We all fail at times (both to lead and to follow), but if the PATTERN of our lives is to LEAD WELL, people WILL follow. Even those who are young can be excellent leaders. 1 Timothy 4:12 says, "Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity." Lead well, and you will be blessed! -Pastor Brad
