Invest In Others
Twenty years ago I screwed up my courage, bought 7,000 linear feet of log from a mill, and built our house. You see, Laura and I wanted a home that could host large groups of people, and in six years of looking couldn't find a single one that we could afford. Choosing to host others serves a number of purposes. 1) Gratitude- We've had dozens of mission teams come to Alaska to help build our church. Making dinner for the teams demonstrates that we are truly thankful for their investment in our ministry.
2) Encouragement- When we host the Chinooks baseball team, missionary families and others in ministry, our goal is to encourage them- to show that others know that what they are doing is important for God's kingdom.
3) Material Help- Dozens of individuals and families have stayed with us for extended periods of time, either to save money or because they simply could not afford to stay somewhere else.
4) RELATIONSHIPS- This one overrides them all. Whether hosting a Bible study or simply having someone for dinner, we are getting to know people better (thus learning to love them on a deeper level).
