A Thankful Heart

My wife, Laura, grew up in Alaska but not in a hunting family. As the oldest child she did much of the cooking for the family when she grew up, but she said that she was too squeamish to even cut up a chicken. As a young married couple in Copper River we were allowed one subsistence caribou each. She wasn't happy about it, but I insisted that she shoot one because we needed the meat. She, however, sat in the tundra overlooking a river and facing the other direction as I cut it up.

When we got home she did not help process the meat. But in the coming weeks I saw a change that was very noticeable. Getting those roasts and steaks and burger out of the nice little wrapped packages in the freezer was just like getting it from the supermarket. We were dead broke and waited for 6 weeks for our first paycheck, so this meat literally took care of us. She was proud that she had provided for the family.

From that point forward she helped me process whatever game the Lord gave us. In Scripture part of God's provision included wild game (Genesis 27:3), fish, and animals raised for food. Receive whatever the Lord provides with a thankful heart, and you will be blessed! -Pastor Brad
