Be Wise

Wild fish and game was a large part of our diet when I was growing up. Duck, pheasant, grouse and venison were staples, as well as walleye and northern pike, bass, panfish and trout. My mom can make an excellent meal out of just about anything. My one-year older brother John is somewhat of a modern day Daniel Boone, and this was every bit as true when he was a young boy. When we walked to the Zumbro River or to the woods as young boys, his goal was to bring home something we could eat.

His ideas of edible food did not perfectly match our mother's. For example, the time we cleaned and brought home a mess of pigeons, she said, "You're not cooking that in my house." The same thing happened when we speared a whole bucket full of crayfish. It happened again when he brought home a large snapping turtle. I guess mom didn't think we were 'that hungry.'

Different cultures eat different foods, but God has declared all foods clean. In the beginning, God gave us food both for our pleasure and for our sustenance. That has not changed. The problem is that our stomachs want to be in charge of our lives. It's like the gas tank wanting to drive the car. Friends, your stomach is a wonderful servant but a terrible master. Be wise. Eat healthy foods in moderation, and your body will thank you. Be blessed! -Pastor Brad
